Convocation Day is the highlight of a student's life as it marks the culmination of their academic life. The Indian Institute of Technology Bombay today held its 51st Convocation at the Convocation Hall of IIT Bombay on August 10, 2013.  Shri S. Ramadorai, Vice-Chairman, Tata Consultancy Services, was the Chief Guest and delivered the  Convocation Address.  

 

This year, IIT Bombay gave away 2044 degrees to successful candidates at various levels.  These include 175 Ph.D., 6 dual degree (M.Sc.+Ph.D.), 4 M.Sc. by research, 10 M.Phil., 561 M.Tech., 117 M.Mgmt., 50 M.Des., 228 five-year B.Tech.+M.Tech. dual degree, 6 PGDIIT, 14 five-year integrated M.Sc., 200 two-year M.Sc. and 439 B.Tech. degrees.

 

Prof. Devang Khakhar, Director, IIT Bombay, said, "IIT Bombay continues to be the most sought-after destination for undergraduate and postgraduate studies and attracts the top performers in national examinations. ...  Among 15  IITs in the country, 67 of top 100 rankers in JEE 2013 have joined IIT Bombay and eight of the top 10 All-India JEE rank holders have chosen to join IIT Bombay.  ... The institute has responded pragmatically to the large increase in the intake by substantially reorienting itself academically, technologically and administratively and using it as a great opportunity to retain its leadership in engineering education in the country.  ...  Research and development activity at IIT Bombay is growing rapidly.  During 2012-13  R&D receipts (Rs. 293.5 crores) grew by 54 per cent compared to the previous year (Rs. 189.9 crores)."

 

At this convocation 46 students received Medals in different categories.  Mr. Chordia Sagar Sajay of the Department of Computer Science and Engineering was awarded the President of India Medal.  The Institute Gold Medal was awarded to Mr. Sisir Yalamanchili of the Department of Energy Science and Engineering, and Dr. Shankar Dayal Sharma Gold Medal was awarded to Mr. Suryawanshi Saurabh Vinayak of the Department of Electrical Engineering.

 

The degree of Doctor of Literature (Honoris Causa) was conferred upon Dr. Kaushik Basu, Professor of Economics and Carl Marks Professor of International Studies, Department of Economics, Cornell University, for his outstanding contribution in theoretical economics both as a researcher and as a teacher, and for his significant contribution as a policy maker in India. The degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) was conferred upon Dr. Ashoke Sen, Professor at the Harishchandra Research Institute (HRI), Allahabad, for his seminal contributions to fundamental physics, especially String theory, and for bringing worldwide recognition for research being carried out in India.

 

The occasion was graced by many distinguished dignitaries including the Chairman, Dr. Anil Kakodkar, and members of the Board of Governors. The Convocation was attended by the proud parents of the graduating students.
