th Convocation of the Golden Jubilee Year

President Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil to deliver Convocation Address

Sri S.C. Jamir, Governor of Maharashtra and Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh, Chief Minister of Maharashtra to be the Guest of Honour

   Mumbai, August 1, 2008: One of the seven higher institutes of technology in the country, the Indian Institute of Technology Bombay will be holding its 46th Convocation during the Golden Jubilee celebrations on Friday, August 8, 2008, at the Convocation Hall of IIT Bombay. Smt. Pratibha Devisingh Patil, President of India will be the Chief Guest and will deliver the Convocation Address. Shri S.C. Jamir, Governor of Maharashtra, Shri Vilasrao Deshmukh, Chief Minister of Maharashtra will be the Guests of Honour at the function.

   Along with Prof. Ashok Misra, Director, IIT Bombay, Honourable Chief Guest, Smt. Patil and guests of honour, the ceremony will be graced by many distinguished dignitaries including the Chairman Dr. Anil Kakodkar and Members of the Board of Governors and will also be attended by parents of the graduating students.

   This year, IIT Bombay will be giving away 1569 degrees - highest in the history of the Institute - to successful candidates at various levels. This year the Degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) will be conferred upon Mr. Ratan N. Tata in recognition of his outstanding contributions to the growth of Indian industry, to the propagation of the values of business ethics and of the social responsibilities of business, and to the overall growth of the country.

About IIT Bombay’s Golden Jubilee Celebration

The 18-month long Golden Jubilee celebrations started in September 2007 and will go on till March 2009. The Golden Jubilee celebration was formally inaugurated on 5th September 2007, the auspicious Teachers' day by the Honourable Chief Guest Dr. A. P. J. Abdul Kalam with Dr. Anil Kakodkar chairing the function. The Guests of Honour were Former Chairmen of the Board of Governors - Dr. Homi Sethna, Dr. D.V. Kapur, Dr. R. Chidambaram, Prof. M. G. K. Menon, Mr. Rahul Bajaj and the Special Guests were Former Directors - Prof. A. K. De and Prof. S. P. Sukhatme. The concluding ceremony will be held on 10th March 2009 which is the Institute’s 50th foundation day. Other events planned during these 18 months include Alumni Day 2008, International Vice Chancellors Conclave, a distinguished lecture series, a number of international conferences, cultural luminary programmes and students and staff events.
