Our Distinguished Alumnus Prof. Bharat Balasubramanian has been featured on the cover of Winter 2017 issue of Southern Automotive Alliances. His interview with the Southern Automotive Alliances mainly was focussed on his ideas on how stronger research and development ties between industry and academia are both a challenge and an opportunity.
Prof. Bharat Balasubramanian, an engineering professor at the University of Alabama and executive director of UA’s Center for Advanced Vehicle Technology, completed his B. Tech with honors in Mechanical Engineering from IIT bombay in 1973. He went on to get a Master of Engineering and a PhD in Automotive Engineering from Technical University Karlsruhe / Daimler R&D, Germany.Prof. Balasubramanian worked 38 years for the Mercedes-Benz brand in Stuttgart, Germany, retiring in 2012 as Daimler AG’s group vice president of research and advanced engineering.
In his interview with the Southern Automotive Alliances, he has stressed the importance of the synergy that should exist between industry and academia. He has also stressed on how there is a pressing need of smart minds and not average working in the automotive companies. “Developing world-class engineers at the local level to provide research and marketing input is exactly my target,” he says. “To work closer with MBUSI. The goal is to make UA engineering graduates just as savvy and knowledgeable as engineers in Germany, and to make them truly multicultural.”
