Knowledge Tree: Newsletter December 2016

Greetings from IIT Bombay!

We are very pleased to bring you the December issue of Knowledge Tree. A quiet month passed us in terms of students activities, this being the month of end semester exams.

We are proud to inform you that Distinguished Alumnus Dr. Dharmendra Modha (CSE '90) received the R&D Magazine's Scientist of the Year award. Dr. Modha holds a B.Tech. in Computer Science and Engineering from IIT Bombay and a Ph.D. in Electrical and Computer Engineering from University of California at San Diego. He is a Cognitive Computing pioneer who envisioned and now leads a highly successful effort to develop brain-inspired Computers. He was also awarded with "The Inaugural Misha Mahowald Prize for Neuromorphic Engineering" in the month of August. Please join me in congratulating Dr. Modha for the unique honour and bringing glory to our Institute.

The month of December will witness alumni from all over the world coming to IIT Bombay to celebrate the Institute Alumni Day on December 25th. The "Distinguished Service Awards 2016" will be presented to our prominent alumni on this occasion. The class of 1991 will be celebrating its Silver Jubilee Reunion on 23rd and 24th December. Along with events like class photography sessions, this reunion will mark announcement of Legacy Project of Class of 1991. The Decennial Reunion of class of 2006 will also be held on December 25. I cordially invite all the alumni and their families to be a part of the celebrations.

I am also delighted to invite you to Distinguished Lecture by Prof. Kaushik Basu on December 9 under NR Kamath Lecture Series. His talk is entitled "The Economics of Corruption, Black Money, and Demonetization". Prof. Basu is the NR Kamath Chair Professor at IIT Bombay and C Marks Chair Professor at Cornell University. He was earlier the Chief Economist at the World Bank and the Chief Economic Advisor to Government of India. Please see below for further details.

The month of December is going to be filled with many action packed and colourful events. The student placement for class of 2017 will start from December 1. We wish all the students the very best. The Institute will also be hosting our annual cultural extravaganza - Mood Indigo 2016 from 23rd to 26th December and annual technological festival - TechFest 2016 from 16th to 18th December. Please see the articles under Upcoming Events section to know more about them.

Please join me in wishing success to our contingent for the 51st Inter-IIT Sports Meet, which will be held at IIT Kanpur from 12th to 19th December. In the same spirit, I am happy to inform you that IIT Bombay will organise the first ever Inter-IIT Cultural Meet on 20th and 21st December. With many competitions lined up, we are looking forward for this event.

Along with the cultural bustle, the Institute is also going to witness a number of international conferences this month. Many exciting lectures and conferences are lined up, details of which can be found in the Upcoming Events section.

This month, IIT Bombay hosted several international dignitaries. Mr. Mauro Moruzzi, Ambassador, Head International Relations and State Secretariat of Education, Research and Innovation in Switzerland visited the campus to discuss and streamline the process of Indo-Swiss Joint calls and further built networking ties for bilateral collaboration with IITB. IIT Bombay also entered into an agreement with The Federal University of Minas Gerais to encourage student and faculty exchange amongst the two elite technology institutes of the world.

We're glad to announce that the hugely popular Tinkerers' Laboratory is going to be expanded at its current location in N5 Bay. The work for the same is already underway. We're grateful to the batch of 1966 for providing funding support this expansion and Department of Electrical Engineering for providing space for the Tinkerer's Laboratory. The new facility will be thrice as spacious and better equipped for supporting the creativity of students.

The Institute continues to attract outstanding talent as new faculty members. Several have joined IIT Bombay in the past. We are pleased to give you a short introduction in the following article.

The generous contributions received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps in making an important difference in our endeavour to pursue global excellence. The contributions towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute's betterment to the best of your ability.
