Dear Friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay!

The Institute celebrated its 58th Foundation Day on March 10, 2017. It was on this day that the foundation stone for the Institute was laid by Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru in 1959. The Chief Guest for the occasion was Mr. Sanjay Mashruwala (B.Tech. 1971), Managing Director of Reliance Jio Infocom Limited. On this occasion, the Institute conferred the Distinguished Alumnus Award to 11 of our alumni, for their remarkable contribution to their professions and society. Two young alumni were awarded with Young Alumnus Achievers Award for having made outstanding achievements in their chosen field of work and are below the age of 40. During the function, the 'Prof. S.C. Bhattacharya Award for Excellence in Research in Pure Sciences' was conferred on Prof. Amiya Pani, Department of Mathematics and the 'Prof. H.H. Mathur Award for Excellence in Research in Applied Sciences’ was conferred on Prof. Rinti Banerjee, Department of Biosciences and Bioengineering.

It brings me immense pleasure to inform you that the Tinkerer’s laboratory facility has been renovated and expanded, and was inaugurated on March 11, 2017 by Prof. Devang Khakhar. We would like to acknowledge with thanks the generous contributions from the Class of 1975 and Class of 1966. The Tinkerer’s lab has also received immense support from the department of Electrical Engineering. The Tinkerer’s lab is a student managed facility and is available to them on 24x7 basis. It includes facilities for both electronic and mechanical fabrication. Over 500 students use the facility annually.

The Institute signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with Tokyo Institute of Technology on 1st March, 2017. The MOU will help to strengthen the relationship between IITB and TIT in areas of Chemical Engineering and Materials Science.

The ‘Research Scholars’ Confluence and Alumni Meet, 2017 (ReSConAm’17) a global conference and R&D expo was held on the 18th and 19th  March 2017 to bring  research and entrepreneurship fraternity under one roof. The meet was a huge success as it saw a participation of 300 researchers, entrepreneurs, scientists, startups and Industrialists. Prominent speakers for the meet included  Mr. Anshuman Verma, Founder and Managing Director of M1L,  Dr. Vikas Karade, Founder, AlgoSurg among others.

Kaladarshan, the annual fine arts and photography exhibition of IIT Bombay took place on 4th-5th March, 2017. This year's Kaladarshan witnessed an overwhelming footfall of about 20,000 and received  around 200 artworks and 350 photographs under the theme “Dreams Unboxed.”

I am very proud to announce that Innovation Cell of the Institute has won the ASME Student Design Competition (SDC-2017) which was held from 3rd to 5th March 2017. The team performed spectacularly as it won all the events by a huge margin along with the Advance Manufacturing Challenge and Predictive Design & Simulation Challenge, beating all the teams across Asia Pacific region.  The team is now focused on further improving  the current design for the finals at ASME International Mechanical Engineering Congress and Exposition (IMECE) on  November 2017. Please join me in congratulating the team for its spectacular performance and wish them all the best for the competition ahead.

The Institute celebrated the National Science Day on 5th March 2017. A series of public lectures were held, and included interesting topics such as “X-Ray Crystallography: Photography at an Atomic Level”, “Building a Space Telescope” and many more were delivered by our very own faculty members from across departments. The talks were followed by a panel discussion on “Bringing together science and technology at IIT Bombay” where  Prof. R. K. Shevgaonkar, former Director of IIT Delhi and professor of Electrical Engineering, Prof. Prita Pant, department of Metallurgical Engineering and Materials Science, and Prof. Subimal Ghosh, department of Civil Engineering discussed threadbare the important issue of insufficient exposure of research work to the undergraduate students.

IIT Bombay Sports Council organised its first ever, three day sports festival, ‘Aavhan’ from 24th to 26th March 2017. It witnessed a footfall of about 3,000 talented sportspersons participating  from several parts of the nation like NIT Surat, IIT Goa, IIT Dharwad, PDPU Ahmedabad and many more. A total of 13 sport tournaments were organised, which even witnessed enthusiastic participation from our alumni. This event proved to be an excellent platform for them to engage with their juniors. The overwhelming response from the alumni community provoked the council members to introduce yet another series of tournaments designed especially for the alumni.

The Institute continues to attract outstanding talent as new faculty members. Several have joined IIT Bombay in the past. We are pleased to bring a short introduction of these new faculty members in the article below.

The generous contributions received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps in making an important difference in our endeavour to pursue global excellence. The contributions towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
