Knowledge Tree: Newsletter May 2017

Dear Friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay!

The Institute was riveted with a mixed buzz of activities and exams as this month saw the end-semester examinations. Yet another academic year has gone by and we wish our graduating students a successful and fulfilling career and life ahead.

I am very pleased to inform that the 2nd annual National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) ranks were announced by the Ministry of Human Resources Development, Government of India, earlier this month. The IITs continue to dominate the ranking, with IIT Bombay being pipped by IITM for the first position.

The Institute Valedictory Function to herald the graduation of the latest batch of students was held on 26th April at PC Saxena Auditorium. The Valedictory Function is the ceremony to welcome the graduating students to the family of IIT Bombay alumni. The event was graced by Prof Viral Acharya, Deputy Governor, Reserve Bank of India, as the Chief Guest. A world-renowned economist, Prof. Acharya is a President of India Gold Medallist awardee of IIT Bombay. He is also the recipient of Young Alumnus Achiever Award from the Institute. Delivering the valedictory address, Prof. Acharya emphasised the importance of being ready for unexpected opportunities. He also shared his own experiences at IIT Bombay and how it shaped his career and life’s mission. During the function, Prof. Devang Khakhar, Director, presented Certificates of appreciation to some Student Alumni Relations Cell (SARC) members for their outstanding contribution to the Institute. Prof. Soumyo Mukherjee, Dean of Student Affairs, ceremonially handed over the list of graduating students to mark its transition to the alumni list. Several hundred graduating students signed the “Give One for IIT Bombay” pledge promising to contribute 1% of their income to IIT Bombay during the function.

Colourful festivities were held all through the month, with the hostel valedictory functions making all the graduating students cherish and relive all their memories of the Institute. The Hostel Cultural General Championships (Cult GCs) and the Performing Arts Festival results were also announced. The first prize was bagged by ‘Rannbhoomi’. Please join me in congratulating all the participants as well as winning hostels for their marvelous performances and efforts.

The Gymkhana Colours were awarded to the students for their outstanding performances and contributions in different fields. Our congratulations to the Colour awardees for their contributions.

An Institute Lecture on joint seat allocation system for admissions to IITs and NITs entitled JoSAA: Challenges and Impact, was delivered by Mr. Utkarsh Patange of Alphagrep Securities, Mumbai. An Institute Lecture on banks, markets and financial stability was delivered by Young Alumnus Achiever Awardee Prof. Viral Acharya, Deputy Governor of Reserve Bank of India. An Institute Distinguished Lecture on particle synthesis mechanisms was also delivered during the month by Prof. Sanjeev Kumar of IISc, Bangalore.

During the month, the Institute signed three Memoranda of Understanding (MoUs) with University of Sydney, Australia, Swansea University, UK and Sabanci University, Turkey.

The Institute continues to attract outstanding talent as new faculty members. Several have joined IIT Bombay in the past. We are pleased to bring a short introduction of these new faculty members in the article below.

The generous contributions received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps in making an important difference in our endeavour to pursue global excellence. The contributions towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
