Knowledge Tree: Newsletter June 2017

Dear Friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay.

We are pleased to bring you the June edition of Knowledge Tree. The month marks the joining of another batch of alumni as our ambassadors to the world. We wish all of them a great and successful life ahead.

I am delighted to inform you that our distinguished alumnus Prof. Subhash Khot (BTech, CSE 1999) has been elected a Fellow of the Royal Society (FRS). Please join me in congratulating him for this notable distinction. Subhash is currently a professor of Computer Science at New York University, USA.

In another interesting news, our Distinguished Alumnus Prof. Bharat Balasubramanian (BTech, ME 1973) has been featured on the cover of the Winter 2017 issue of the Southern Automotive Alliances. His interview discusses how research and development ties between industry and academia can be seen as both challenges and opportunities. He also talks about future assessment of this field. Please read his full interview here.

We are very pleased to invite nominations for the Distinguished Service Award (DSA), which is conferred on our alumni who have contributed in a very notable and sustained manner to the progress of the institute. The nominations may be submitted by June 30, 2017 by sending details of the nominee and a short description of the contribution to dean.acr.office@iitb.ac.in with cc to diptidatye@iitb.ac.in. The list of past recipients can be seen here.

The 10th edition of the ShARE World Seminar was hosted by IIT Bombay this month. ShARE is a global student think-tank and currently has over 3000 members from premier institutes spread across 15 countries. The theme of this year’s seminar was ‘Shaping Tomorrow’s Prime Movers’. The discussion was spread over multiple domains such as Energy, Industry, Finance, General Economics, Technology and Business Strategy.

The Institute Technical Summer Project (ITSP), organized by Students Technical Activities Body (STAB) kickstarted in this month with a new set of inquisitive technical enthusiasts. The ITSP started in 2012 with the motivation of providing an opportunity to our first year students to gain firsthand experience on a technical project. ITSP has been a huge success among students over the years and some really interesting projects have come out of it. Every year, several hundred students participate in ITSP and learn to get their hands dirty with technology-oriented projects.

Prof. Vikram Vishal of the Earth Science Department of IIT Bombay received the prestigious Indian National Science Academy (INSA) medal for Young Scientist (2017). Please join me in congratulating Prof. Vikram on this recognition. Prof. Vikram is also an IITB alumnus and has completed his Master of Science in Geology from Earth Sciences Department. He is also a fellow of the IITB - Monash Research Academy.

The Student Alumni Relations Cell (SARC), IIT Bombay organized a Phonathon earlier in May to update our alumni of the latest news from the Institute. The event is being over a period of 10 days (May 25 - June 3). During the Phonathon, a large number of alumni from the 2007, 2002, 1992, 1982, 1978 and 1968 batches are being contacted. I thank all of you who agreed to talk with our students during the Phonathons. I also request you to participate in the various programs discussed by our team during the Phonathons. In case you have not yet heard from us, and are interested in talking to our current students, please drop me a mail. We will be happy to identify a mutually convenient date and time for the call.

The Institute continues to attract outstanding talent as new faculty members. Several have joined IIT Bombay in the past. We are pleased to bring a short introduction of the new faculty members in the articles given below.

The generous contribution received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps on making an important difference in our endeavor to pursue global excellence. The contribution towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
