Knowledge Tree: Newsletter September 2017

Dear Friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay

The first full month of academic year is always full of memorable moments. The monsoon added to these moments on August 29 with the highest rainfall recorded in over a decade. The campus residents braved the occasional flooding with forbearance. The city was not that fortunate; all three local train networks and the airport had to be shut down. The roads were also badly flooded. The Mumbaikars again demonstrated their indomitable spirit and bounced back to normalcy.

The 55th Convocation was held on 12th August, and saw the induction of a fresh group of graduates to the alumni family. Distinguished Alumnus Manohar Parrikar, Hon’ble Chief Minister of Goa, was the Chief Guest and delivered the Convocation Address. During the Convocation, the Institute’s Lifetime Achievement award was conferred upon Prof. NB Ballal of MEMS department. The Institute also conferred the degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) on Dr Yusuf Hamied, Chairman of Cipla, in recognition of his outstanding contribution to the growth of the pharmaceutical industry. Over 2,200 degrees were awarded in the largest ever Convocation of the Institute. The President of India Medal was awarded to Aniket Sanjay Patankar of Mechanical Engineering while the Institute Gold Medal was awarded to Himanshu Nigudkar of Engineering Physics program.

The Independence Day was celebrated on 15th August, 2017 with fervour across the Institute. Prof Devang Khakkar, Director, hoisted the flag in the presence of a large number of students, faculty and other campus residents. The campus recalled the sacrifices of our freedom fighters and resolved to protect freedom and liberty.

Distinguished Alumnus Raj Nair (C’1971, Met. Eng.), Chairman, Avalon Consulting, delivered an Institute Lecture on the topic 'The Future is Here.' Other important visitors to the campus included Dr. Ajei Gopal (C’1982, ME), President & CEO of ANSYS, Inc. Dr. Gopal talked about his days at IIT Bombay and at Cornell and his later experience of the real world.

I am also pleased to inform you that the Tata Centre for Technology and Design organised a workshop of students from IIT Bombay and from sister Tata Center at Massachusetts Institute of Technology on August 3-12, 2017. The workshop focussed on social innovation and included an immmersive field visit to understand success stories in urban and rural setting. Deshpande Foundation also provided assistance with the workshop and case studies. Around 20 students and faculty members from MIT participated in the workshop in addition to more than 50 from IIT Bombay.

The Institute continues to attract outstanding talent as new faculty members. Several have joined IIT Bombay in the past. We are pleased to bring a short introduction of each new faculty member in the article below.

The generous contributions received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps in making an important difference in our endeavour to pursue global excellence. The contributions towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
