Knowledge Tree: Newsletter December 2017

Dear Friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay.

We are very pleased to present the December issue of Knowledge Tree. The campus, went into a relative lull in terms of student activities, this being the month of the End Semester Exams.

I am delighted to inform you that Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) University Ranking BRICS 2018 has rated our Institute as the highest ranked among all Indian universities and 9th ranked overall. The ranking of IIT Bombay moved up by 4 places since last year. The distinction is yet another manifestation of the progress being made by our Institute towards global excellence.

I also again invite you to the Institute Campus on the 24th December on the occasion of the Alumni Day. Feel the impact of your alma mater’s work on the world through short talks. A new feature being introduced during this year’s Alumni Day, we look forward to the talks stimulating more ideas that leverage IIT Bombay’s expertise to make a difference. The Silver Jubilee Reunion of the class of 1992 will be organised from 22nd to 24th December. The class of 1987 will be having its 30th reunion on Alumni Day while the class of 2007 will have their decennial reunion on the same day. I look forward to meeting you there and hope that you will visit your alma mater in large numbers.

Please join me in congratulating the team of Prof. Ashish Pandey and PhD scholar Ajinkya Navare on the success of their research on enhancing mindfulness of managers and students with mindfulness meditation methods. The IIT Bombay team, along with Prof. Rajesh Chandwani of IIM Ahmedabad examined the role of mindfulness in enhancing moral reasoning through survey and experiments involving over 400 management students with average work experience of three years. We also congratulate the IIT Bombay student team operating under the umbrella of Unmesh Mashruwala Innovation Cell (UMIC) and mentor Prof. Abhishek Gupta for winning the world finals of this year's American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) student design competition (SDC) held at Tampa, USA on November 5, 2017.

Mood Indigo will be held on December 22-25 while Techfest will be held on 29-31st December this year. The 52th Inter-IIT Sports Meet is being held at IIT Madras in December. Please join me in wishing all the success to our team.

The Institute continues to attract outstanding talent as new faculty members. Several have joined IIT Bombay in the past. We are pleased to give you a short introduction in the following article.

The generous contributions received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps in making an important difference in our endeavour to pursue global excellence. The contributions towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
