Knowledge Tree: Newsletter May 2018

Dear friend,
Greetings from IIT, Bombay!
Every year, the month of May experiences a mixed set of emotions- anxiety, focus, and adrenaline rush on one end of the spectrum for the remaining papers of the end semester exams and shear glee, exhilaration, and excitement on the flip side for the coming Summer break. The break’s significance varies for the students. While the freshmen enjoy what’s notoriously termed as their ‘last real vacation’ with some precocious ones already gearing up for summer projects and internships, the sophomores get busy in figuring life out. For the later years, the concept of break blurs into just a slightly long holiday with them grappling with internships and projects and whatnot. For those pursuing masters and PhD, it’s a whole different story. We certainly can’t forget the graduating batch. Yet another academic year has gone by and we wish our graduating students a successful and fulfilling career and life ahead.

To herald the graduation of the latest batch of students, the ‘Institute Valedictory Function’ was held on 13th April, at the Convocation Hall, momentous as it was right where the students’ journey into the institute life began. The Valedictory Function is the ceremony to welcome the graduating students to the family of IIT Bombay alumni. The event was graced by IIT-B alumni Mr. Shantanu Rastogi, Managing Director of General Atlantic and Roli Gupta, CEO of Oorjan as the chief guests for the evening. Delivering the valedictory address, both guests reminisced their campus life and shared some experiences that though insignificant at their time in campus, helped shape them what they were now. During the function, Prof. Devang Khakhar, Director, presented Certificates of appreciation to some members of the Student Alumni Relations Cell (SARC) for their outstanding contribution to the Institute. Prof. Soumyo Mukherjee, Dean of Student Affairs, ceremonially handed over to me the list of graduating students to mark its transition to the alumni list. Several hundred graduating students signed the “Give One for IIT Bombay” pledge promising to contribute 1% of their income to IIT Bombay during the function.

Colourful festivities were held all through the month, with the hostel valedictory functions making all the graduating students cherish and relive all their memories of the Institute. The Hostel Cultural General Championships (Cult GCs) and the Performing Arts Festival results were also announced. The first prize was bagged by the play, ‘Aseer-E-Hayaat’ by hostels 4, 5, 6. All the participants as well as winning hostels deserve the heartiest of congratulations for their excellent performances and efforts.
The Gymkhana Colours were awarded to the students for their outstanding performances and contributions in different fields. Our congratulations to the Color awardees for their contributions.

The generous contribution received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps on making an important difference in our endeavor to pursue global excellence. The contribution towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.

Suhas Joshi,
Dean, Alumni and Corporate Relations.
