Greetings from IIT Bombay.

 

The enthusiastically awaited Mumbai rains arrived with clockwork precision, and alongside that plenty of events kept the grounds humming with action. This month, the Institute again prepares to welcome with open arms its past students who had gone back to their first homes for the summer break and the upcoming batch of freshmen.

 

We are proud to inform you that IIT Bombay has moved significantly up from 179th rank last year to 162nd rank this year in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings.  Overall, the Institution improved on its previous year’s performance by a staggering 17 place leap. Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay ranks first in India, with an overall score of 48.2 out of 100. The QS rankings were released on Wednesday, June 6th, by QS, a British company.

 

IIT Bombay had organised a Photography Competition on the theme of 'Beat Plastic Pollution' on the occasion of the celebration of World Environment Day on June 5th, for its faculty, students and staff. Prof. Devang Khakhar, Director of IIT Bombay, felicitated the winners and participants of this competition in a prize distribution ceremony organized at Jalvihar Guest House of IIT Bombay on June 21st. The first prize was bagged by Mr Chintamani Joglekar, Jt. Deputy Registrar, Hostel Coordinating Unit. All the winners were felicitated with memento and certificates while the participants were honoured with Certificate of Participation. Prof. A. K. Suresh, Deputy Director (Academic and Infrastructure Affairs), Prof. Soumyo Mukherji, Dean (Student Affairs) were present on the occasion among others. The Institute has displayed posters on its campus to create awareness on Plastic Pollution and encourage avoiding single-utility plastics like a water bottle, takeaway coffee cups, etc., among the campus residents.

Abhyuday, the social body of IIT Bombay also organized a campaign on the occasion of World Environment Day to support Plastic Ban by Maharashtra Government. The Abhyuday team visited 7 NGOs and conducted various activities with a vision of effectively and efficiently using plastic waste already present in our surroundings. Abhyuday conducted a workshop with the NGOs in which they were taught to design paper bags which potentially can replace Polyethene bags. The NGOs also informed about the helpful and harmful activities related to environmental problems. More than 40 volunteers joined hands with 20 Abhyuday team members to support the campaign. During the campaign, more than 350 paper bags were designed with help of 200+ children from different NGOs and they distributed these bags among 15 vendors.

 

Yoga is a 5,000-year-old physical, mental and spiritual practice that originated in India. It transforms both body and mind. On June 21st, IIT Bombay celebrated the fourth International Yoga Day on campus. The Institute organized its first ever “National level Yoga Championship” on March 30th that witnessed a participation of 140 yoga enthusiasts competing against each other for prizes worth Rs. 30,000. The event had participants from Bengaluru, Hyderabad, Raipur, Rajkot, Pune and Nashik. Various workshops, lecture and symposiums were organized by the Wellness Club of IIT Bombay – Yogastha. There was series of events with regard to the celebration of International Day of Yoga (IDY) on June 21st, organised in the campus. A workshop on 'Pain Management’ was organized on June 4th, for practising Yogasanas to relieve the pain from different body parts. A lecture by Ms. Nitika Gambhir, a practising Yoga Therapist and Diet and Fitness Consultant was organized on June 12th. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from all the members of the IIT Bombay community including faculty, students, staff and their family members. Two yoga sessions were conducted on June 21st, at the indoor Badminton Court located at IIT Bombay.

 

The generous contribution received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps on making an important difference in our endeavor to pursue global excellence. The contribution towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
