Knowledge Tree : September 2018

Dear Friend, Greetings from IIT Bombay! With the city bidding farewell to the monsoon winds in the month of September, our institute too bid adieu to the Class of 2018, but just from campus for they’d always be a part of IIT Bombay. We welcome the newly minted alumni in the Institute’s Alumni family after the memorable Convocation Day. It marks the beginning of a new and memorable phase in their lives and revives our campus spirit.
The Student Alumni Relations Cell (SARC) organised the first ‘Coming Full Circle’ Talk of 2018, interviewing Dr. Shailesh J. Mehta on 10th August. ‘Coming Full Circle’ is an event that celebrates the achievements of the esteemed alumni of the institute and his journey from the hallowed corridors of IIT-B to heading the multi-billion dollar companies. The talk focused on his experience and his academic life at the institute and the skills he developed that enabled him to make the best out of his situation. The session also involved his vision for upcoming years and his motivation for opening a management school in the campus.
IIT Bombay gracefully organized its 56th convocation ceremony on 11th August 2018 at the Convocation Hall of the institute, conferring a total of 2621 degrees in graduate and undergraduate level courses. The occasion was graced by the Hon’ble Prime Minister of India, Shri Narendra Modi, as the Chief Guest of the ceremony. The Hon’ble Prime Minister delivered the Convocation Address and also unveiled the plaque for new building of the Department of Energy Science and Engineering and Centre for Environmental Science and Engineering.
I take immense pride in announcing that the degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) was bestowed on Dr. Romesh Wadhwani for his contributions as a technologist and business leader. Further, three students were presented with gold medals for their exemplary performance, and 36 research scholars were selected for the ‘Award of Excellence in PhD Thesis’. The Convocation ceremony marked the conclusion of the academic stay of graduating students and hence was an event filled with a wide spectrum of emotions.
The 72nd Independence Day was celebrated in the institute with great patriotism and enthusiasm. The flag hoisting ceremony was conducted at Main Building Foyer in presence of the Director of the institute, Professor Devang Khakhar. The national flag was unfurled by the Director at 9:00 in the morning followed by the National Anthem and a speech. Every hostel of the Institute also observed the hoisting ceremony and the notions of liberty and independence were cherished.
The Student Alumni Relations Cell (SARC) also conducted ‘ProVachan’, a series of interactive talks delivered by the alumni based on their experience of working in non-core sector, held on five days between 20th August to 29th August. These sessions proved to be extremely helpful to students aiming for a non-core career path due to informal nature of the event and the unbiased view of the sectors presented by the speakers. Topics such as selection process, work description, growth opportunities, higher education and work life balance were covered and were aimed at resolving any dilemmas that students may face while entering into a particular sector. The event was graced by the following alumni: Ankush Thakkar (Consultancy - 20th August) Sandesh Bade (IT- 21st August) Natwar Mall (Analytics- 22nd August) Tejas Naphade (Finance- 25th August) Ahana Gautam (FMCG- 29th August) Just like the Non-Core counterpart, SARC also executed the Core Talks, a series of 17 talks on the Core fields of different disciplines that IIT-B offers a degree in. The generous contributions received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps in making an important difference in our endeavour to pursue global excellence. The contributions towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
