Dean's message

Dear Friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay!

I am pleased to present you the July edition of our newsletter.

As the annual monsoon brings with it a mystical air of excitement and freshness, we welcome this month, not only our current students but also our batch of freshmen, to a whole new academic year.

First and foremost, it is my great pleasure to inform you that IIT Bombay still remains India’s best university, having been placed 152nd in the Quacquarelli Symonds (QS) World University Rankings 2020 released on June 19. A jump of 10 places from last year’s ranking, it is a mark of our Institute’s excellence and progress.

The Student Alumni Relations Cell (SARC) organised the 31st Annual Phonathon from May 31 to June 9. A telephonic marathon to provide a common interactive platform for students and alumni over direct telephonic conversations, it saw great participation from our students with more than 100 volunteers and over 15,000 calls. Our alumni were informed of various initiatives of SARC such as the Industrial Learning Program, Core Talks, Mock Interviews and many others. Volunteers gained some insight into the professional life of our alumni, while they recalled fond memories in reconnecting with their alma mater. A speed-mentoring session was also organised simultaneously with the Phonathon, witnessing over 60 volunteers, who were enlightened and groomed by skilled life coaches.

On another note, Abhyuday, IIT Bombay, successfully conducted the Powai Lake Mega Cleanup Campaign in association with Nisarg Swasthya Sansthan on the occasion of World Environment Day (June 5), which was followed by the plantation drive on the banks of the lake. Over 400 volunteers actively participated in the campaign, spread out along a stretch of 1.5 kilometres along the bank of the lake in 6 different groups and collected around 1.5 tonnes of solid waste including plastics and other materials that pollute the lake. Their efforts set an example to people about the responsibility of cleaning our lake and protecting the environment from destruction.

The Industrial Design Centre (IDC), IIT Bombay organized the Design and Degree Show (DDS) 2019 at VMCC, IIT Bombay on June 22 and 23, 2019. The event showcased the design projects by the outgoing batch of the Master of Design (M. Des.) students of five streams and the first outgoing batch of Bachelor of Design (B. Des.) of IDC School of Design, IIT Bombay. Its theme ‘Form and Re-form’ celebrated the ‘ever-evolving’ spirit of Design that perpetually aimed towards creating better and overarching solutions for the challenges that our present faces and the future holds.

The Wellness Club of IIT Bombay- Yogastha also conducted the celebration of the International Day of Yoga on June 21. In this regard, a series of various workshops, lectures and symposiums were organized and various competitions were conducted during the event. The chief guests, Ms. Anu Aggarwal, founder and director of Anu Aggarwal Foundation, and Mr. Tushar Pradhan, CIO, HSBC, along with the Director IIT Bombay, Prof. Subhasis Chaudhuri and the Dean of Student Affairs IIT Bombay, Prof. T. Kundu also graced the occasion with their esteemed presence. The event witnessed enthusiastic participation from all members of the IIT Bombay community including faculty, students, staff and their family members.

The Institute organised two series of lectures this June. The first, on June 6, was delivered by Prof. T. Pradeep, Professor of Chemistry and ‘Deepak Parekh’ Institute Chair Professor at IIT Madras, on “From Materials to Clean Water: Science Technology and Industry”. Another set of lectures on “Heartfulness Meditation”, organised as a part of International Yoga Day celebrations from June 7 for three consecutive days, were delivered by Ms.Sonali Godbole, Mr.Tushar Pradha and Dr. Lalitha Dhareshwar, respectively followed by a group meditation session each day.

This month, we are delighted to welcome Prof. Vijayshankar Dandapani to the IIT Bombay family who joined the Department of Metallurgical Engineering and Material Sciences as an Assistant Professor. Prof. Vijayshankar would be focusing his efforts in developing a lab that is equipped with facilities to perform hydrogen permeation experiments combined with mechanical deformation capabilities on a global level as well as using different local electrochemical techniques. His research interests include corrosion and organic coating delamination, interfacial electrochemistry, stress corrosion cracking and hydrogen induced failure of materials.

Apart from the start of the much-awaited new semester (and new year), we look forward to the SIGCHI summer school from July 18 to 20, the Summer School of AI-Assisted Data Analytics from July 11 to 14 and the Chapter’s Leadership Meet on July 6 and 7 with the agenda of a joint working session to finalise the activity plan for the year for the AA leadership team in Mumbai as well as the chapter leadership teams.

As a means to promote future institutional cooperation and carry out collaborative activities in various academic and educational fields, IIT Bombay signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the Ecole Nationale Supérieure Des Arts Decoratifs, France and the Sri Lanka Technological Campus, Sri Lanka in April 2019.

The generous contribution received from our alumni, corporate entities, and other friends of the Institute helps in making an important difference in our endeavour to pursue global excellence. The contribution towards Institute Development, Infrastructure Development, Young Faculty Awards, Chair Professorships, Hostel Development, Student Development, etc. are examples of utilization of these funds for the betterment of the Institute. We invite you to contribute to the Institute’s betterment to the best of your ability.
