Dean's Message

Dear Friend,

Greetings from IIT Bombay!

I’m extremely glad to present the newsletter for the month of September. The campus witnessed a blissful monsoon and now it appears as if wrapped in a green carpet! The month also saw the start of a new academic semester in full swing.

We are currently inviting nominations for Distinguished Alumnus Awards and Young Alumni Achiever Awards 2020 for consideration. As you are aware, IIT Bombay confers the Distinguished Alumnus Awards (DAA) every year to those who have reached positions of eminence in the areas of Business, Academics, Research, Government, Public service and Entrepreneurship. These individuals would have distinguished themselves in their fields of work and done the Institute proud. The next awards will be presented on the Foundation Day on March 10, 2020.The Young Alumni Achiever Awards (YAAA) are for alumni who have shown outstanding achievements in their chosen field of work and are below 40 years of age as on March 10, 2020. I request you to send nominations for Distinguished Alumnus Awards & Young Alumni Achiever Awards. Please also provide details of their achievements or contributions along with the nominations. Nominations received during the last 3 years will be automatically considered, and need not be nominated again. Please send in your nominations to Dean ACR Office at dean.acr.office@iitb.ac.in  with a CC to Ms.  Indu Biswal at indu.biswal@iitb.ac.in  latest by October 15, 2019.

IIT Bombay proudly held its 57th convocation ceremony on Aug 10, 2019. Shri Ramesh Pokhriyal ‘Nishank’, Hon’ble Minister of Human Resource Development, was invited as the Chief Guest. More than 2,500 degrees were awarded during the convocation ceremony. I take immense pride in announcing that the degree of Doctor of Science (Honoris Causa) was bestowed on our distinguished alumnus Mr. Nandan Nilekani for his tremendous contributions.

The Independence Day was celebrated on August 15, 2019 with fervour across the Institute. Prof Subhasis Chaudhari, the Director, hoisted the flag in the presence of a large number of students, faculty and other campus residents. Celebrations followed in the Kendriya Vidyalaya too where the students put up mesmerising performances to recall the sacrifices of our freedom fighters and resolved to protect our freedom and liberty.

On Aug 7, SARC for the first time organised UPSC Talk with IIT Bombay alumni, Kanishak Kataria (UPSC 2018 AIR-1) and Shreyans Kumat (UPSC 2018 AIR-4). The talks received tremendous response from students who were greatly inspired by them. Core Talks and ProVachan were conducted from Aug 24-Sept 1 by the Student Alumni Relations Cell (SARC)  and a number of alumni of the Institute from different sectors were invited to address the sessions and to answer the queries of the students in different core and non-core sectors. In addition to this, SARC also launched its much sought after initiative this month: The Alumni Student Mentorship Programme (ASMP). We wish all the alumni mentors a great mentorship experience ahead.

Our Institute is always ready to extend a helping hand and reach out to those in need. The havoc caused by floods in the states of Maharashtra, Karnataka and Kerala had been very disturbing. IITB student community is planned to provide aid by supplying necessary goods and other donations to mitigate the loss of property, damage to human life and crops in these regions. We pray to God so that the citizens again demonstrate their indomitable spirit and recover from this tragic situation.

The IIT Bombay Alumni Chapter organised its annual classical concert, Varshastuti, on August 24 at the PC Saxena Auditorium in the Institute. This year, the stage was lit up by one of the most talented young-gen vocalists- Mrs. Yashaswi Sirpotdar. At Varshastuti, Mrs. Yashaswi Sirpotdar was accompanied by Shri. Tejovrush Joshi on tabla and Mr. Sidhhesh Bicholkar on harmonium. The event received great applause from the classical music enthusiasts amongst the students, faculty and other staff at IIT Bombay.

The speaker, Prof. Geeta Narlikar is a Professor of Biochemistry and Biophysics at the University of California, San Francisco. Also, there was a talk on ‘Mobile Robots, Autonomous Systems, and Cooperative Control’ by our own professor, Dr. Aseem Borkar, Dept. of Systems and Control Engineering, IIT Bombay to help the students gain insights into these topics. Yogastha, the Wellness Club of IIT Bombay also held a talk on ‘Yoga-The Way to rejuvenate the mind & body’ by Sri M, who is a spiritual guide, social reformer and an Educationist. The Institute continues to attract outstanding talent as new faculty members. We cordially welcome one more member to the IITB family, Prof.Rohan Chinchwadkar. He is a valuable addition to the Shailesh J. Mehta School of Management, IIT Bombay where he joined as an Assistant Professor in April, 2019. We are pleased to bring a short introduction of him in an article below and also wish him a great career ahead.
