IITB's Gajraj wins ASME

The IIT Bombay team consisting of Ravi Mittal (Leader), Jaspul Singh Chawala, Dhiren Pratap Singh (all V year Dual Degree Mechanical Engg.) have won the 1st prize at the American Society of Mechanical Engineers (ASME) student design contest from Region XIII of ASME International which is all of the world except North America (Canada, USA and Mexico).  This is the seventh time IIT Bombay has won this contest.

The participants had to design a vehicle to carry rice upward three steps (total of 11 inches)  and then turn 90 degrees and climb down one step and deliver the rice at that stage in 10 minutes.  The IIT B team had designed a semi-automatic bulk material transporter, named ‘Gajraj’. Gajraj made 9 trips in 10 minutes and delivered 34.3 kg of rice.  This feat was impressive by far, considering that the runner-up team could manage to deliver only 8 kg of rice. The team received the cash prize of US $ 200, a citation to individual, and a trophy.

They will be participating in final rounds at Orlando, Florida on November 13, 2005 and compete with the other 12 North American teams. There travelling expenses will be sponsored by ASME International and IIT Bombay Heritage Fund, a US based alumni association of IIT Bombay.
