42nd Foundation Day of IIT Bombay - Prof. S. P. Sukhatme honoured with Life Time Achievement Award

The  first ever   Life Time Achievement Award  of  IIT Bombay was bestowed on Prof. Suhas P. Sukhatme, former Director of IIT Bombay and currently the Chairman of the Atomic Energy Regulatory Board on the occasion of the 42nd Foundation Day of the Institute, held on March 12th, "in recognition of his outstanding contributions to this Institute".

Prof. M. G. K. Menon, Chairman, BOG,  presented the citation to Prof. Sukhatme along with the traditional shawl, sriphal (coconut ) and a crystal memento.

The citation, which was read by Prof. Ashok Misra, Director, IITB  stated:

"The Board of Governors and the Senate of the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay felicitate Suhas P. Sukhatme teacher, scientist, technologist and administrator revered by students and alumni as a renowned teacher and scholar, admired by colleagues as a promoter of excellence in academics & esteemed by the Scientific and Engineering fraternity as a visionary, recognized by the Nation as a leading educator and administrator"

Responding to the award, Prof. Sukhatme thanked the community of IIT Bombay for bestowing upon him the singular honour. He observed  that  IIT Bombay is his "Karma-bhoomi". He thanked his mother and his wife, who were present for the function, for their support & contribution towards all his achievements. Reflecting  on his experiences, Prof. Sukhatme quoted a paragraph from an unfinished essay that he wrote while graduating form MIT, where he had emphasized setting goals for oneself in life, goals which contribute towards national progress and  towards fruitful research. According to him, one should always have a  mission in life which encompass personal as well as national goals.

Prof. Sukhatme, who was also awarded the "Padmashree" in this year's Republic Day Honours List, was unanimously selected for this singular honour. A short film prepared by the Educational Technology Cell, was screened which traced Prof. Sukhatme’s personal and career graph and highlighted his manifold achievements.
