Performing Arts Festival ‘05
Huge sets,
gripping dialogues, absorbing acting, vibrant lighting, live dance and
singing performances, and around 2000 audiences, Performing Arts Festival (PAF)
only got bigger this year. The PAF, grand finale of the cultural year, was
held from March 20 to April 2, 2005. The PAFs mark the culmination of over a
month of enthusiastic work put in by the hostels. Each PAF was scheduled
with a gap of 3 days in between, when the respective hostels could work in
the Open Air Theatre at SAC. The schedule of the PAFs was as follows:
• 20th
March - ‘Lal Rekha - Ek Marichika’ by Hostel 2, Hostel 7 and Hostel 11
• 23rd
March- ‘Satyoham’ by Hostel 9 Hostel 13 and Tansa House
• 27th
March- ‘Bombay’ by Hostel 1, Hostel 5 and Hostel 10
• 30th
March- ‘Kasturi’ by Hostel 4, Hostel 8 and Hostel 12
• 2nd
April - ‘Dastak’ by Hostel 3 and Hostel 6
The judging
panel this year consisted of Prof. Sharmila, Deptt. of HSS, Prof. A.
Bhattacharya, Deptt. of Mechanical Engg., Prof. Kushal Deb, Deptt. of HSS,
Prof. Shishir Jha, SOM, and Prof. Varsha Apte, Deptt. of CSE.

The first
prize was bagged by ‘Dastak’ presented by H3 and H6. Dastak was based on
the life of Safdar Hashmi, great writer, actor and activist. Dastak was
also unique in the fact that for the first time a street play was staged
in a PAF. Dastak also won Best Music, Best Lights, Best Direction, Best
Screenplay, Best Voice-Over, Best Acting (Joint with Bombay), and Best
Choreo.
The second
prize went to ‘Bombay’ by H1, H5 and H10. ‘Bombay’ was about 3
characters -an actor, |

journalist and a local goon- who want to make it big in their respective
fields and way they achieve their goals in this great city of Bombay.
This PAF also won Best Publicity, Best Acting (joint with Dastak), Best
Costume, and |

Best Sets.
‘Satyoham’ of H9, H13, and Tansa stood third. It portrayed the conflict
between the truth and self-ego. It also used revolutionary ideas to
create imagery such as Sand animations for depicting transition in
perspective, ultraviolet lighting to bring out hidden images on the set
and ‘Smoke Screen’ effects to herald entry.
‘Lal Rekha
- Ek Marichika’, a Hostel 2, Hostel 7 and Hostel 11 PAF, won Best Script
whereas Best Actor Award was won by Kunal Saxena. |
