Teachers' Day Celebrated

"Don't allow technology to become a teacher…it is only an Aid. Keep it that way". Prof. Menon said in his address on Teachers' Day.

The Teachers' Day celebrations were held on September 5, 2003, in honour of Dr. Radhakrishnan's birth anniversary. The Chief Guest of the occasion was Prof. M.G.K. Menon, Chairman, BOG, IIT Delhi. The awards for 'Excellence in Teaching' and 'Dr. P.K. Patwardhan Technology Development Award' were presented at the function held at P.C. Saxena Auditorium. Since the Teachers' Day Awards were first constituted in 1996, it was the first year that a Management award has been presented.

The function began with a Cultural programme arranged by students which included a song "Gurusamarpan", which narrated the debts of a student towards a teacher, and a Kuchipudi Dance "In Praise of Lord Krishna".

Prof. Sarda, Dean AP, introducing the programme, stressed on the importance of a teacher's role in the students' learning and development process. He stated that "the role of a teacher is crucial, as students today are exceptionally confident and highly competitive…which is why they need to be honoured."

A video clip profiling the nominated teachers was screened. Students introduced their professors and highlighted their strengths and most memorable moments in the institution. The teachers who were recipients of the Teachers' Day Awards for Excellence in Teaching were: Prof. Shiva Prasad, Physics; Prof. V.D. Sharma, Maths; Prof. K. Sudhakar, Aerospace Engineering; Prof. M.S.C. Bose, Mechanical Engineering; Prof. B.G. Fernandes, Electrical Engineering; Prof. A. Subash Babu, IE∨ Prof. S. Banerjee, Earth Sciences; and Prof. P.V. Prof. Ashok Misra, Director, IIT Bombay, in his address stressed on the importance of celebrating Teachers' Day. He stated, "Teachers are builders of our nation, with respect to the shaping the thought processes of the students."

Prof. Menon, Chief Guest of the day, stated, "Don't allow technology to become a teacher…it is only an aid. Keep it that way". He went on to say, "The whole question of a teacher is much deeper. The greatest teacher is the mother, who not only teaches but also influences at the deepest levels". He reminisced about his life and provided an illustration of how his teacher played a catalystic role in his life. "A good teacher provides a sense of taste, value and creativity," he added.

"Teaching is about living, learning and interacting together. It is not about rushing to class, but bringing out the capability of the human being he represents", he concluded.

Prof. V.D. Sharma and Prof. B.G. Fernandes responded on behalf of the awardees. Prof. Karunakaran in his response mentioned the contribution of the various students on his team.

Dr. Radhakrishnan (1888 - 1975): "The aim of education is not the acquisition of information, although important, or acquisition of technical skills, though essential in modern society, but the development of that bent of mind, that attitude of reason, that spirit of democracy which will make us responsible citizens."

Tech Award for OptiLOM

This year's "Dr. P.K. Patwardhan Award for Technology Development" was conferred on Prof. K.P. Karunakaran, Mechanical Engineering, for the software called OptiLOM. The idea of OptiLOM conceived in 1997 took about 5 years to mature as a commercial product. It is the culmination of a series of well-planned credit seminars, B.Tech., D.D. and M.Tech. projects. It has been demonstrated through OptiLOM that student projects need not be confined to the racks in the library but can reach the industry.

During his response while receiving the award, Prof. Karunakaran acknowledged the following students for their significant contributions to OptiLOM: Shivmoorthy Dibbi, (M.Tech. - IEOR - Jan 2000), D. The findings were reported through a press-release by the University of California, Santa Barbara, USA and is available at www.Sciencedaily.com/ releases/2003/07/030730080334.htm.

Alzheimer's Disease is one of the most devastating brain diseases in middle-aged and elderly humans in the modern society. This disease is characterised clinically by progressive loss of memory and other cognitive functions, resulting in dementia and ultimately death. Brain tissue samples of Alzheimer's patients show extensive neuronal cell death and two abnormal pathological structures known as neurofibrillary tangles and amyloid plaques.

To develop a drug that could arrest and prevent Alzheimer's disease, scientists must first understand what is causing the death of brain cells known as neurons. A new way of looking at the disease is reported in the reported article.

Linguistic Data Consortium Initiated

An MHRD initiated meeting of leading natural language processing groups of the country was held at the Central Institute of Indian Languages (CIIL), Mysore, on August17 and 18, 2003. The objective of the meeting was the starting of the Linguistic Data Consortium (LDC) initiative in India in line with the LDC effort at the University of Pennsylvania initiated by Prof. Mark Liebermann of Upenn in 1992, who was present at the deliberations.

The purpose was in response to the importance and the growth of the language technology (LT) in current times and visualizing the importance of this area for India. The meeting was attended by IBM Research Delhi, HP Labs Bangalore, IIT Madras, IISc Bangalore, IIIT Hyderabad, IIT Bombay, MHRD and other organizations involved in LT research, deployment and funding.

Prof. Pushpak Bhattacharyya of IIT Bombay spoke on the need for and the methodology of semantic tagging of corpora. The Indian language wordnets are the resources for this, which are currently being created for Hindi and Marathi in a substantial way at IIT Bombay. He has also been chosen a member of the committee to oversee this initiative of national and international importance.

Future Profile of IITB Students

The IIT student will now require "techno-managerial" skills to land the right role in the industry", Prof. Sandip Roy speaking at the seminar.

"Technical Education, IITs and the Marketplace", the seminar by Prof. Sandip Roy, Chemical Engineering, on September 10, 2003, presented an intensive study that primarily focused on the scope of technical education in the future and evaluated the changing equation between resources and performance.

The seminar reviewed the ongoing economic changes in India's technical education sector, highlighted the current performance indicators of the IIT system - with an emphasis on IIT Bombay - and indicated the changing nature of market requirements of technical manpower.

The lecture emphasised the "economy of technical education" and market changes on technical manpower needs. Prof. Roy stated that globally the higher and, in particular, the technical education sector is currently undergoing a transformation. The key forces driving it were the declining role of the government, the emergence of the "knowledge economy," the increased emphasis on market economy and privatisation and rising education costs.

Prof. Roy outlined the core areas of "Structural Adjustment" policies of the government during early 1990's, which have led to reduced public expenditures, the declining role of government in education and the emergence of "Knowledge" economy that were the core components that made-up the larger canvas. These factors have triggered the rise of private sector in education, steeper costs of higher (technical) education and the need for independent institutional revenue generation for better sustenance/performance.

The demand for higher education, especially technical courses and non-traditional delivery modes is growing, while the capacity of the public investment to satisfy the demand is declining which is due to budget limitations, the changing role of government, and increased emphasis on market economy and privatisation.

Consequently, one has to assess and anticipate the likely future trends in the technical education sector of the country. In particular the IITs - the providers of technical education - may require evolving policies and strategies, as well as augment their performance beyond the current levels.

Prof. Roy then narrowed down to focus on IITB's role. He said that IITB could strategise externally by helping upgrade Technical Education in India (CDEEP), assessing modes and potential for revenue generation and exploring avenues for intensification of industry interactions for greater economic impact. The internal strategies could include developing as a "mini marketplace" that would reflect actual scenarios of the market-industry, to ensure that students develop the competitive edge at the campus stage itself. He said, "openness and freedom is critical to the functioning of the academia", which could effect macro-level changes, thereby benchmarking the performance level and establishing the right incentive structures.

The IIT student will now require "techno-managerial skills" to land the right role in the industry", said Prof. Sandip Roy, at the seminar. The increasingly diverse forces in the industry will require IITians to combine technology with sound business skills and inculcate the "spirit of analysis in adapting", to earn higher salaries. "We need to preserve the traditional academic values by adapting to the forces dominating the market", he added.

Prof. Roy concluded that IIT must develop a more dynamic academic role by counter balancing forces like government regulation with commercialisation, markets with academic core values, transience with permanence, idealism with pragmatism to generate a more resourceful academic programme towards meeting the ever changing needs of the future. He also said that IIT must have a trustworthy network partner between IITB and the industry. "Technology development in the laboratory is one thing, but taking it to the market is another."

Multi-Ethnicity in Campus through IIT Collaborations

"Nahi Chahiye", are the first words Julien Chapron of France, studying at the Department of MEMS, has learnt during the course of his stay at IIT. He is one of the ten students who have taken the initiative to learn Hindi by attending Hindi classes conducted by the institute.

"It will help us to communicate to people outside," he added thoughtfully. "When you talk in English, you can only speak to educated people in the community".

In response to IIT Bombay's efforts for the past several years to reach out to the world academia, the institution has 28 foreign students admitted to various programmes this year. The students, mostly involved in Ph.D and M.Tech programmes, are from countries like Ethiopia (15 students), Germany (4 students), France (4 students), Sweden (2 students) and a student each from Nepal, Switzerland and USA. The percentage of foreign students aspiring to gain admission in the institution has increased in the past few years.

Many of the students are here as a result of the MoUs that have been signed with institutions across the globe opening up research opportunities for students. Students from countries like USA, Canada, Switzerland and Ethiopia did not figure in the IIT student roll two years ago, but the picture is slowly changing. Multi-ethnicity in the campus has also evoked varied responses and influences to the enriched student culture fabric.

"Here the teaching methods are very different. It is more curriculum-oriented and the classes are smaller, so you get to interact more", said Ilango Sriram, Germany, who is presently studying at the department of CSE. "Another thing that strikes me is how much the girls are separated from the boys". His observations reflected the thoughts of many foreign students. "We were also surprised to see a strong sense of inter-hostel rivalry," stated Nicolas Falquet, France, from the Department of CSE.

"Back in France, we have only grass lawns in our campus. I was surprised to see so many trees around with the dogs and cattle roaming freely about," Nicolas added.
