INDIA is one of the fastest growing health care markets in the world. The current estimate of health care device market is about $ 1 billion with a projected growth rate of 18%. Realizing this huge potential, Indian industry as well as academia has started showing keen interest in biomaterials and medical devices research. As a result, establishments like National Laboratories, Indian Institutes of Technology and other Leading Universities have started research as well as teaching programmes.
Society for Biomaterials and Artificial Organs-India was formed in 1986 with the following objectives. The Society shall be cultivating an atmosphere for the growth of basic and technologically oriented research in Biomaterials and Artificial Organs and also bring the professionals from various faculties together to improve the quality of their approach in future research. So far 13 National conferences are organized by the Society from time to time, with the financial assistance mainly from the various departments of the Government of India such as Department of Science & Technology (DST), Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR), Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and other private agencies. In addition to the delegates from all over India, these conferences have been attended by delegates from all over the Globe, in particular from USA, Germany, Netherlands, and Turkey etc.
I.I.T. Bombay has been actively working in the field of Biomaterials and Biomedical Engineering for the past two decades. The first National Seminar BIOMAT 2000 held at Lonavla brought together the Doctors, Scientists, Engineers and Industrialists in the area of health care on to a common platform.
Currently, there are active collaborative research projects going on between I.I.T.B, I.I.T. Kgp, TATA MEMORIAL CENTRE, MIDHANI, CGCRI, SCTIMST, ARCI, KEM HOSPITAL, DENTAL COLLEGES, SUSHRUT SURGICALS and INOR etc.
The XIV National Conference on Biomaterials and Artificial Organs BIMAO 2003 is a unique event where all the important scientists, engineers, technologists, medical doctors, from academic institutions, national laboratories, hospitals, medical research centers, Corporate R&D, Pharmaceutical Industry, Implant Producers, and Manufacturers of processing, testing and analytical equipment are likely to participate in a scale that is unprecedented.
