APRIL 25, 2020: FAQ'S FROM IIT HOSPITAL

Should I wear gloves while going outside to protect myself against COVID?

No. Your gloves can get contaminated and then if you touch your face, you may still get infected. WHO does not recommend the routine use of gloves. Gloves may give you a false sense of security. Unnecessary use of gloves will generate lots of waste!

So what  should I do?

1. Wash your hands! Washing your bare hands thoroughly soap and water is enough. Wash your hands multiple times in the day especially after coming home from outside and after handling things that you buy from outside.

2. Avoid touching your face. Wear a cloth mask and eye glasses when  you go out.

How should I clean and disinfect surfaces at home?

Continue cleaning your house like before.

Consider putting a wipable  cover for your mobile phones. Use an alcohol wipe containing 70% alcohol to wipe your mobile phone.

You need to disinfect surfaces with extra care only if there is someone sick at home.

High touch surfaces include tables, door knobs, handles, phone, taps, toilets, sinks etc. Do not clean electric switches with soapy water/ alcohol. Clean surfaces with soap and water. Disinfect surfaces with household disinfectants/ diluted household bleach solutions. Follow manufacturers instructions to ensure safe and effective use. Do not  touch bleach with  bare hands. Use reusable gloves. Wash your  hands thoroughly with soap  and water after cleaning/ disinfecting.

How should I clean my mask and clothes?

Cloth masks and clothes should be washed with detergent as usual. Disposable masks are not meant for reuse.

How should I clean clothes of a person who is sick?

Clothes of a person who is  sick can be washed with other people’s clothes. Don’t shake dirty laundry. A person who is sick can put used clothes/ linen directly into the washing machine or into a bucket of water with detergent before you hand wash them. Wash your hands after doing laundry.

How  should I handle groceries, vegetable and fruits?

Place all your purchases in one place when you return home and wash hands. Put your cloth bags for washing or discard your disposable bags appropriately. Separate your purchases into vegetables/ fruits, boxed/ packaged items, meat/ fish/ eggs.

Wash vegetables and fruits thoroughly  with tap water and dry  them before storing. Do not use soap/ bleach. Ones that cannot be washed before storing (eg. Onions) may be kept as they are in a separate place. Wash thoroughly with tap water before cooking/ eating.

Remove and dispose appropriately the outer cardboard or plastic packaging of other groceries and store the contents as usual. If you need to store these with the outer packaging, you may wipe  the surface with soapy  water.

Eggs and packets of frozen meat/ fish can be washed with soapy water. Fresh meat/ fish should be washed and refrigerated/ frozen within 1 hour of purchase. Frozen meat should be thawed in the fridge or in cold water or in the microwave but not at room temperature.

After putting your groceries away, wipe the surface with soapy water and wash your hands. Remember, there is no evidence of COVID being transmitted through food or food packaging. The virus will not actively multiply on surfaces and will die in a few days. Cooking will kill COVID and almost all other germs.

How should I handle coins and bank notes?

Wash your hands with soap and water after toughing coins or banknotes. Avoid touching your face while handling cash. You could use cashless transactions whenever possible.

  1. Guidelines for home quarantine given by Govt of India were shared earlier: https://www.mohfw.gov.in/DraftGuidelinesforhomequarantine.pdf.  These should be followed strictly. People in home quarantine should strictly not leave the house.

  2. Household help (maids/cleaners/cooks etc) should not be allowed to enter houses where someone is in home quar ntine. Building residents should be aware of who is home quarantined, and educate household help of this rule and t e risks of not following it.

  3. The no-help policy should also be applied as a safety measure in any house where someone is sick (fever, sore thr at, cough, cold, diarrhoea, nausea, tiredness, etc), unless COVID can conclusively be ruled out.

  4. Unless absolutely necessary, it is good to stop household help from coming to work during this period in general, f such help is coming from outside the campus, or if such help is also working is houses outside the campus. In any ase, building residents should instruct household help and building cleaners to not come to work if they are feeling e en slightly sick (fever, sore throat, cough, cold, diarrhoea, nausea, tiredness etc), and to not work in any house where there is a sick person.

  5. Residents of houses with quarantined people should minimize contact with the outside world, including with deli ery people, making payments online as far as possible.

  6. Do treat quarantined neighbours with empathy. Please help them in whatever way possible without risking your o n safety. E.g. food can be cooked in neighbours' houses and supplied in disposable containers without physical cont ct, purchases can be made and delivered at home so they do not have to go out, etc.

Stay safe and healthy!
