IIT B team proceeds to Robocon ’05 International finals

IIT Bombay team has won the national level Robocon competition (at Pune) and will now proceed to Beijing for the international finals on 28 Aug. 2005. IIT B team defeated Nirma Institute of Technology, Gujarat in the finals. IIT B team scored an average of 40 points per game versus the 5 or 6 managed by most other teams (incl. several IITs). “We were confident that we would do well and had worked hard for it. We did not lose any of the matches in the contest,” said Ashish Bhat, the leader of the winning team. The team had been preparing for the last two months, even during the one-month vacation. “We are looking forward to the international contest and hope to do well there too,” Ashish said.

The theme of the contest was ‘Material movement'. The game required the robots to reach (following the grid on the floor) the centre of the arena on their own, carrying as many balls (size 8 inches) as it could, and drop the balls after identifying the basket of the assigned colour (one out of blue/green/red) through use of sensors.

IIT Bombay team was completing the game in 15 seconds - leaving the opponent flat footed for the rest of the 165 seconds of the 3 minute game. The robot built by IITB performed flawlessly and consistently for 12 games!

The IITB team consists of Ashish Bhat, Electrical Engg. – Leader, Rahul Singh, Mechanical Engg., Amol Deshmukh, Mechanical Engg., Nipun Dave, Electrical Engg, Sudhanshu Gupta, Chemical Engg. and Ankit Mehta, Mechanical Engg.  as a  Mentor.

The contest was co-hosted by the Maharashtra institute of technology (MIT) and
