Recent Technology Startups from IIT Bombay

Two technology startups - IdeaForge and SEDEMAC - have recently emerged out of the Society for Innovation and Entrepreneurship SINE (http://www.sineiitb.org), IIT Bombay, buoyed by financial assistance through Technopreneur Promotion Programme (TePP) from the Department of Scientific & Industrial Research (DSIR) (http://www.dsir.gov.in), Ministry of Science and Technology. TePP funds innovative products with potential for commercialization; SINE being a TePP outreach centre, which recommends deserving cases for the funding.

IdeaForge Technology Pvt. Ltd. (http://www.ideaforge.co.in) produces a range of innovative products, such as mechanical chargers for electronic gadgets. The company has been co-founded by Ankit Mehta, Ashish Bhat and Rahul Singh, all IIT Bombay alumni. The founders have had extensive participation in Institute's student competition event, "YANTRIKI".

With funds from TePP, Ideaforge has also built an autonomous Micro Air Vehicle (MAV) that can be used for various purposes including surveillance. In a noteworthy demonstration of the MAV, a top official of the Department of Science and Technology was escorted from his office to outdoors by the one square foot 'flyer' (MAV) moving just a meter ahead of him and a meter above the ground. Some of the flying demonstration can be viewed at:

Another recipient company, SEDEMAC (
http://www.sedemac.com) focuses on engine management systems (EMS) for the automotive industry. The company is co-founded by Prof. Shashikant Suryanarayan, a faculty member of mechanical department of IIT Bombay, Pushkraj Panse and Manish Sharma both are alumni of IIT Bombay.

IITB SEDEMAC Team

SEDEMAC has developed fully functional low-cost engine control units (ECUs) for two-wheelers, which are for petrol as well as diesel engines. Laboratory tests of the ECUs have proven fuel economy and lower emissions which match with international emission norms. The pilot tests of ECUs have also shown easy start of the engines over entire range of operating conditions.

With all these proven features, the products cost significantly lower than that of global suppliers. This is the first successful developmental effort from scratch in India for a high performance EMS solution supporting fuel injection operation at a cost significantly lower than international cost.
