Course Objectives
Estimates
of fault currents are required for deciding rating of the power apparatus,
fuses, circuit breakers etc. These fault currents are estimated by fault
analysis program. Important issues in fault analysis are sequence modeling of rotating
machines (generators and motors), use of empirical multiplying factors to
account for violation of restraints due to dc offset current, flux decay etc.
In this course fundamentals of fault analysis will be reviewed. Fault analysis
as per ANSI/IEEEStd141-1986 will be discussed. The theory will be supported
with examples worked using fault analysis program developed at IIT Bombay.
Relay
coordination is an important activity for both utilities and industrial power
systems. The inputs for relay coordination like fault currents and apparent
impedances are derived from the fault analysis program. Overcurrent and Distance relay coordination
for both radial and meshed systems will be covered. Demonstrations will include
a digitizer to obtain polynomial fit for manufacturer supplied data sheets for
inverse overcurrent relay characteristics, over current and distance relay
coordination programs etc. Problems faced in setting backup zones during
distance relay coordination due load encroachment and power swings will be
discussed with illustrations.
Who Should Attend?
The
course is meant for people interested in power system protection. In particular engineers from electrical
utilities, consultants, research scholars and faculty of engineering colleges
are invited to attend it.
