Two-day CEP Course on

Urban Drainage Management: State-of-the-Art

September 29 – 30, 2003

Introduction

Already in its twelfth edition, over 400 officers and engineers from 50 organizations in India and abroad have so far benefited from this course in the last 3 years. The course has undergone continuous revisions, helped to a large extent by the feedback given by the participants and the various organizations and now addresses current water and wastewater drainage problems in urban areas of India.

Background

It is now well known that each year during the monsoons, heavy rainfall occurrences cause severe flooding in urban areas resulting in severe disruption to the urban infrastructure. Also, the urban drains are increasingly being used for wasetwater/sewage disposal and the overflows result in epidemics. Thus, there is an urgent need to implement state-of-the-art technologies to minimize the damage by making the drainage and treatment systems more efficient.  Moreover, rainwater harvesting during the monsoon season offers a viable alternative to the present urban water crisis.

Course Objectives

The aim of the course would be to familiarize the participants with the state-of-the-art technologies in urban water and wastewater drainage management.  This year's course has been updated to include formulation of drainage master plans, removal of sediments from drains, urban lake management and rainwater harvesting with actual case studies from various cities in India and abroad.  At the end of the course the participants would be in a position to identify and select appropriate strategies for their local conditions and implement measures for better water management to reduce the flooding and damage. This course would also provide an excellent opportunity for the participants to interact with one another and discuss problems and solutions of mutual interest.

Course Content

1.       Design considerations with respect to Storm drains/ Sewers and Computer models for urban drainage modelling and management.

2.       Best Management Practices including Source control, Porous pavements, Infiltration basins, Detention storages.

3.       Rainwater harvesting.

4.       Coastal flooding.

5.       Quality issues in urban drainage: Removal of urban solid waste and sediment deposits from stormwater conduits and drains, Constructed wetlands for stormwater quality control, Urban Lake management.

6.       Integrated approaches to quantity and quality control in urban drainage systems; Public education programme.

7.       Formulation of City Drainage Master Plans.

Who may benefit

Officers and Engineers working in city municipalities, city development authorities, government transport organizations, consulting companies, research organizations as well as self-employed practitioners engaged in the analysis, design, planning, construction, operation and maintenance of urban drainage works would benefit from the proposed program.

Course Faculty

Prof. Kapil Gupta, Department of Civil Engineering and other faculty from within the department.  Other national experts are also expected to make presentations at the course.

Prof. Kapil Gupta has been involved with the urban drainage issues for over 15 years. He is a member of the TETT- Technology Exchange Transfer and Training Committee and other sub-committees of the International Joint Committee on Urban Drainage and the National Committee on Urban Infrastructure Development.

Venue
