Two-Day CEP Course on

Mobile Internet

Wireless Network Architectures and Applications

January 13-14, 2003

Introduction

With the increasing proliferation of wireless devices, there is a significant need for mechanisms to connect such devices to the Internet and enable them to serve as clients in traditional Internet applications.

However, directly porting existing applications for use with such clients and across wireless networks is extremely inefficient. This is because (i) some of the assumptions in traditional networking protocols do not hold in wireless networks, and (ii) the capabilities of client devices, such as battery power, display size, are very different from the traditional PC clients.

Hence designers of Internet-based applications can no longer be agnostic of the network characteristics or the end-user device capabilities. These aspects need to be kept in mind while designing applications for 3G networks.

Course Plan

The proposed short-term course on Mobile Internet is intended to bring out the issues in designing applications for mobile devices. The course will cover the basics of medium access in wireless networks, network architectures for roaming and client mobility, and end-to-end issues in application design. Emphasis will be given to detailed understanding of the underlying design decisions in selected wireless network protocols, architectures and applications.

Course Duration and Venue

The course duration is two days: Jan 13-14, 2003. Each day will consist of several lecture sessions and will end with an open session to discuss ideas and issues identified by the audience.

Venue: Auditorium, First Floor in the Kanwal Rekhi School of Information Technology, IIT Bombay, Powai, Mumbai.
