CONTINUING EDUCATION PROGRAMME
INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY, BOMBAY
WORKSHOP ON Intelligent Product
Design and Manufacturing
Date :
September 23 - 25, 2003
Time : 9 AM To 5.30 PM
Intelligent Product Design and Manufacturing
Manufacturing in the 21st
century faces several challenges such as shorter product life cycles,
frequent design revisions and the need for shortest time to market to
meet the global competition. During the last decade, CAD/CAM/CIM tools
were developed to automate and integrate various phases of the product
cycle like design, analysis, planning, production and inspection. They
provided significant benefits in terms of enhanced productivity and
product quality, but had little flexibility to incorporate the knowledge
and heuristic reasoning ability of the human experts.
ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE
Today the focus worldwide is
on the development of Intelligent CAD/CAM systems to mimic the reasoning
ability of human experts by using the techniques of Artificial
Intelligence. (AI) Intelligent Manufacturing primarily addresses the
issues of integrating product design through manufacturing activities
using computer tools for Knowledge Representation such as Artificial
Neural Networks, Fuzzy Logic and Genetic Algorithms. Applications
include practically every aspect of design and manufacture, typical
being intelligent product modeling, process and assembly planning, rapid
prototyping, mould and die design, intelligent layout planning and web
based Collaborative engineering.
FOCUS
The objective of this course
is to introduce this new and exciting field of Intelligent CAD/CAM with
particular focus on Product Design and Manufacturing. The course will
comprise of lectures, case study presentations and software
demonstrations.
Neural Networks for Intelligent
Process Monitoring and Control : Applications to CNC machining, Metal
Forming.
Intelligent Manufacturing Planning,
Scheduling and Control.
Intelligent Assembly and Layout Planning
Internet based Collaborative CAD/CAM : Applications to web based CAD, CAPP, CNC,
Assembly planning, and
Rapid Prototyping.
SOFTWARE DEMONSTRATIONS
In-house developed software
packages on Internet based Collaborative CAD/CAM such as Palantir-
webCAD, webCNC, webRobot, RP-Sim, Intelligent Setup & Assembly planning
etc and software tools like Artificial Neural Network, Genetic
Algorithms will be demonstrated with various engineering applications.
THE
CAM LABORATORY
The Computer Aided
Manufacturing (CAM) laboratory at IIT, Bombay, houses a trainer Flexible
Manufacturing System (FMS) consisting of CNC milling center, turning
center, robots and a programmable conveyor in an integrated environment.
It also has various workstations with CAD/CAM software. These are
extensively used for custom software development, research and training.
