If you are applying to the MSc-PhD programs at the IITs, it is expected that your
interest lies in research and the PhD degree is your long-term goal. If for
some reason, students are unable to continue for the PhD degree, then different
IITs have different exit options.
At IIT Kanpur, transfer from the MSc-PhD dual degree programme to
the MSc programme is not
permitted. However, for students admitted to the MSc-PhD
dual degree programme, MSc
degree will be given after successful completion of all academic requirements
for the first six semesters while working towards the PhD degree.
At IIT Kharagpur, a student admitted to the
joint MSc-PhD programs will be eligible for
consideration to take admission into the PhD programme
provided the student obtains a certain minimum CGPA at the end of the fourth
semester. Otherwise the student will have to leave with a
MSc degree. A student may also on his/her own decide
not to continue with the PhD programme and leave with
an MSc degree after successful completion of all the
academic requirements for the first four semesters.
For all other IITs, the policy for exit
options, if any, can be obtained from the websites of the respective
departments offering the programmes.
