Title: "Leading a Comprehensive Research University: Challenges and Opportunities."
Speaker: Prof. Satish K. Tripathi, President, University at Buffalo, The State University of New York, Buffalo, New York, USA
Abstract: Higher education institutions across the globe face numerous challenges that have the potential to disrupt the administration, governance and the operations of the institution. These challenges, while formidable, can also lead to productive new practices, innovative solutions and opportunities for enhanced relevancy. I will consider how higher education institutions can rise to these contemporary challenges while remaining true to their mission-driven priorities.
About the speaker: An internationally distinguished researcher and higher education leader, Prof. Satish K. Tripathi, Ph.D., is the University at Buffalo's 15th President. Prof. Tripathi, who served as UB's provost from 2004-2011, was Dean of the Bourns College of Engineering at the University of California, Riverside from 1997-2004. Previously, he spent 19 years as a Professor of Computer Science at the University of Maryland, including seven years as Department Chair. A fellow of the IEEE and the American Association for the Advancement of Science, he has published more than 200 scholarly papers, supervised more than 30 doctoral and postdoctoral students, and served on program committees of numerous international conferences.
Prof. Tripathi graduated at the top of his class from Banaras Hindu University (BHU). He holds a Master's degree and a Doctorate in computer science from the University of Toronto, as well as Master's degrees in Statistics from the University of Alberta and BHU. He has received honorary doctorates from the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Allahabad, and Brock University in Canada. Prof. Tripathi serves on the College Football Playoff Board of Managers and chairs the Internet2 board of trustees. Previously, he was Chair of the Mid-American Conference Council of Presidents and on the boards of NCAA Division I, NCAA Board of Governors, the Association of American Universities, the Association of Public and Land-Grant Universities, and the Council for Higher Education Accreditation. A past member of the Reimagine NY Commission, he was the inaugural co-chair of the Western New York Regional Economic Development Council.
