The Government of India designated 29th June as the National Statistics Day to honour the birth anniversary of Prof. Prasanta Chandra Mahalanobis and recognize his significant contributions to statistics and economic planning, in 2007.
Prof. Mahalanobis was an Indian statistician who introduced the Mahalanobis distance and played a crucial role in formulating India’s industrialization strategy during the Second Five-Year Plan (1956–61). Widely regarded as the father of Indian Statistics, Prof. Mahalanobis held various national and international positions, including serving as the chairman of the United Nations Sub-Commission on Sampling from 1947 to 1951 and as the honorary statistical adviser to the government of India from 1949. In recognition of his pioneering work, he was honoured with the Padma Vibhushan, one of India’s highest honours, by the Indian government in 1968.
