Course content

Heat treatment of plain carbon and alloy steels: Annealing, normalising, hardening and tempering.  Effect of using different cooling media.  Hardenability measurement by Jominy test.  Surface hardening by thermochemical treatments (carburizing / boriding).  Quantitative metallography to evaluate ceramics, inclusion count, case depth and reinforcement in composites.  Tutorials for introducing important aspects of heat treatment.

Experiments in Heat Treatment Lab: Effect of carbon on the hardness of steels. Quantitative metallography of ceramics (grain size / porosity in Al2O3 or ferrite sample), composites (fibre diameter, vol. fraction of dispersoids) and study of inclusions in steels. Effect of cooling media. Tempering of steel. Determination of hardenability by Jominy Test. Pack carburizing of steels or Boriding of steels, Measurement of case depth and verification of Harris equation.
