IIT Bombay Celebrates Librarian's Day
National Librarian's Day Celebration at IIT Bombay

The Central Library of IIT Bombay celebrated Librarian’s Day on 12th August 2024 commemorating the 132nd birth anniversary of Dr. S. R. Ranganathan, widely regarded as the Father of Library Science in India.

The Chief Guest of the function was Dr. Shalini R. Urs. Institute functionaries who attended include Prof. Milind Atrey, Deputy Director (Academics, Research and Translation), Prof. Nand Kishore, Dean (Administrative Affairs), Prof. Irishi N. N. Namboothiri, Convenor, Library Committee, Mr. Ganesh Bhorkade, Registrar and Dr. Manju Naika, Chief Library Officer.

Dr. Manju Naika welcomed the guests, outlined the day's agenda and provided a brief overview of Dr. Ranganathan’s legacy. The Chief Guest delivered the keynote address titled, "In Ranganathan's Long Shadow: His Legacy and Impact on Modern Information Systems".

She highlighted Dr. Ranganathan’s foundational works such as "The Five Laws of Library Science" and "Prolegomena to Library Classification", emphasizing their continued relevance in modern information systems.

The event also included a panel discussion on "How Libraries Build Stronger Communities by Connecting and Empowering Users" moderated by Prof. S. Shankaranarayanan. Panelists included Prof. Irishi N. N. Namboothiri, Mrs. Smruti Bhattacharya and Mr. Yogesh Patil.

A highlight of the event was the felicitation of long-serving library staff members who have completed 25 years of service, as well as retired librarians and former Library Committee convenors, for their dedicated contributions to the Central Library.

Over 100 participants, including students, faculty and library professionals attended the event.
