IIT Bombay unveiled its Strategy Plan 2026–2030 & Beyond, outlining a bold strategic direction to position the Institute among the world’s leading technology universities by 2030, while strengthening its long-term leadership in education, research, innovation, and societal impact with a strong emphasis on excellence.
The plan is anchored around three strategic themes:
1. Learning-Centric Education
A transformative shift toward student-driven and experiential learning, complemented by global academic pathways through joint degree programmes, and a significant expansion of digital education to reach learners worldwide through online degrees and certificate programmes.
2. Frontier Research Leadership
A focused push to elevate IIT Bombay’s research presence in priority domains—including, but not limited to, AI/ML, Climate Tech, Healthcare/MedTech, Quantum Technologies, Semiconductors, Advanced Materials, and Space & Defence. This will be enabled through world-class interdisciplinary centres and strategic faculty recruitment in high-impact areas.
3. Industry and Society Relevant Research & Translation
A commitment to enhancing real-world impact by deepening collaborations with industry, strengthening the startup ecosystem, and accelerating the translation of research and innovation into market-ready and societal solutions.
These strategic themes are supported by six key enablers: strengthening faculty proposition; developing best-in-class infrastructure and a net-zero campus; modernizing management and processes; enhancing financial sustainability; deepening alumni and corporate engagement; and prioritizing the wellness of students, staff, and faculty.
The Strategy Plan was approved by the IIT Bombay Board of Governors and officially unveiled on 8 December 2025 by Dr. K. Radhakrishnan, Chairperson of the IIT Bombay Board of Governors. Developed through extensive inputs from faculty, students, alumni, industry partners, and staff, the plan provides a clear and ambitious roadmap for IIT Bombay’s next phase of growth and global leadership.
