Nuclear Power Corporation of India Limited (NPCIL) and Indian Institute of Technology Bombay (IIT Bombay) signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) for technical development works related to trials for establishing the feasibility and efficacy of Deep Soil Mixing (DSM) technique for the upcoming twin units of 700 MWe PHWR at Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana (GHAVP) units 3 & 4 located in Haryana state on 08th July 2026 at IIT Bombay campus, Powai, Mumbai.
This collaboration will focus on developing a new technique, Deep Soil Mixing (DSM), for ground improvement at GHAVP site that will be first-of-its-kind for a Nuclear Power Plant (NPP) in the country. This will enable faster and safe construction of a NPP’s in sites with soil as founding strata.
Further, development of DSM technique as a candidate method for ground improvement will enable construction of NPP’s in site with soil as founding strata possible, thus accelerating India’s roadmap towards 100 GWe Nuclear Power by 2047 and Net-Zero goals by 2070.
The MoU was signed by Mr. Sulok Kumar Saxena, Executive Director (Engineering), NPCIL and Prof. Shrikrishna V. Kulkarni, Dean (Research and Development), IIT Bombay in the presence of the Project Investigator Prof. Deepankar Choudhury of IIT Bombay and other senior officials from both organizations.
